SARA GARDEN ARMSTRONG
The ideas I've been exploring have found expression in many forms. They communicate through sound, movement, time and light. All the work in one way or another is involved with the landscape of the life cycle - beginnings, decay and regeneration. Using industrial materials and technology, I draw analogies to the respiratory, nervous and circulatory systems; the skin, the brain, vision and perception - exploring our changing relationship to our physical selves and our environment. Inspired by the organic world of the material body, my work seeks to mirror interior systems with the exterior self. The work is concerned with the processes and structures of these "organic interiors" and with boundaries - the intersection of opposite and the contrast which create the dynamics of dialects.
The work expresses itself in a number of directions: sculptural installations, individual sculptural pieces, drawings and bookworks, such as the Airplayers series, which emerged from larger installation pieces but now has its own life cycles and generates its own separate installations.
Paper as a source material has played a fundamental role in my work. The organic nature of paper and its unlimited reservoir of transformations continues to inform my work. My use of paper depends on the project. In a current drawing series, I am adding a thin layer of sprayed pulp to the drawing paper, which gives an added skin texture to work on with pastels, charcoal and graphite. A book project now in progress involves very thin layers of pulp on vinyl over layers of photos of sculptural details on acetate, which creates deep yet translucent interior spaces as the viewer turns the pages.
