Cyrano de Bergerac's novel, which was written in the 1650s, was considered so subversive that it could not be published until after his death -- and even then it could only be published in a severely bowdlerized form. The reason was simply that Cyrano had been too challenging to the orthodoxies both of contemporary astronomy and the Christian religion. Now it can be read for its playful humor and insightful philosophy. Other Worlds: Journey to the Moon has restored Cyrano's text in a newly revised translation and includes an introduction by the well-respected translator Geoffrey Strachan. For this edition artist Leslie Lerner has created eight direct gravures which are reminiscent of his series of paintings My Life in France. The prints were editioned at Jill Lerner Editions in Sarasota, Florida. The imaginative images in this book reflect the artist's personal journey as he experienced Cyrano's. For the chapter openings, there are supplementary line drawings by the artist which feature icons familiar to those who are acquainted with the artist's work. This limited letterpress edition has been printed directly from metal type. The hand-bound book is housed in a custom-made box. The books are numbered and signed in the colophon by the artist and the translator. The edition is limited to 106 copies for sale: price $2300. In addition to the eight etchings bound into the book, the artist has hand-colored sixteen prints which are offered, individually, to those who purchase a copy of the book.
