Hand-painted postcards are becoming popular in Japan, from young grade school students to adults in Adult Education Centers. Postcard exhibitions are being organized and classes teach students how to paint with the brush very slowly. The art of painting postcards, called etagami (illustrated letter) was invented by Kunio Koike, the Japan Etegami Society's current chairman. After several magazines featured him and the nearly 30,000 postcards he has illustrated and sent to friends, etegami gradually grew in popularity! There was a World Etegami Exhibition in February in connection with the Nagano Winter Olympics. The opening reception, featuring a draw for one of curator Banana's limited edition prints, on March 7th. On hand for this gala event was Carl Chew from Seattle, Ed Varney and Jas. W. Felter from Vancouver, who made their first stamp editions in the mid-seventies when the first colour Xerox machines came out. Felter curated the first exhibition of artists' stamps at Simon Fraser University Gallery in 1974. A relative new-comer, Sandy Jackson of San Diego, whose moveable miniatures in "The Four Elements of Bimbolonian Pulchritude" feature collagen, silicone, peroxide and acrylic, will also be present opening night. The exhibition consists of sheets of postage-like art stamps and decorated envelopes by over 40 artists participating in mail-art exchanges from Canada, the U.S.A., and Europe. The International Mail-art Network has been a fertile meeting-ground for artists looking for playful exchanges of ideas and creative projects, since the early 1970's. In the past 15 years, many network artists have focussed on the postage-like stamp medium, creating their own imaginary countries, issuing authorities, limited edition stamp sheets and cancellations. The opening was an "Incongruous Meeting;" a mail-art network event in which visitors are asked to complete an "Incongruous Evaluation Form." Created and administered by Specific Research's Dr. Anna Freud Banana, these forms were the entry form for the opening night draw. |
