Birger Jesch organized an international Mail Art Project with 204 participants from 40 countries. The exhibition, called Gazetta, was generated from a collage mailed to him by an anonymous sender with the names of deceased Mail Artists. Jesch had asked mail artists to create work from their local newspaper on 7 July 1995--a kind of "day in the life". Some people folded, boiled, cut the newspaper, covered a cassette, perforated it like a stamp sheet, sewed, copied, painted, printed, stamped, rolled it up, made it turn yellow from sunlight, etc. A hefty catalog was produced, but Jesch also got a big spread for the show in the Weekend Magazine Section of the Schweriner Volkszeitung for 29 June 1996. The article is all about mail art, rubberstamps, book art, the Network, Mail Art in East Germany, names and addresses of everyone in the show, which reached a larger audience than any exhibition of the mail art itself. Hurrah to Birger Jesch, Friedhofstr. 15, 99444 Blankenhain, Germany. An original piece of paper made from the newspaper is included by Jesch. The last few copies of Mail Art Scene GDR 1975 - 1990 which is only in German, published by Haude & Spener, Berlin, Germany, edited by Friedrich Winnes and Lutz Wohlrab with 124 pages in two colors and 350 visuals is still available for $20 or DM 30 from Jesch.
