Satanic Loves
by Margarita Becerra Cano

This book explores the historical manipulation of womenās sexuality by the Catholic Church. Using quotations from historical texts, it provides an insightful view of how women were systematically degraded, persecuted, tortured and killed to ensure the power of patriarchy. An elaborate edition, with photographic images printed on handmade paper made of linen rags and carrot pulp. Letterpress with hand-bound hardcover. 1993, edition 20, 13" x 10 1/2" x 1" $500

Airborn

Inspired by the artist's visit to China and Japan, Airborn responds to traditional forms in personal ways. A collaboration with poet Melinda Kennedy, text and imagery lyrically describe the five elements of our world. Each print represents and element and the book is organized to visually take flight, progressing from earth to the air. Directions by sculptor/kit artist Tal Streeter describe how to string and fly the kites. The pages/kites are housed in a handmade, hand -printed, cloth-covered folding box. Site Readings

How are books represented in our culture as objects of ideological values? What does this mean to us? The author examines values that books have inherited, and when and how they have endured through changes in our culture. Images illustrate the use of books in public spaces--as statuary, in paintings, and as elements of architectural inlay. These two volumes preserve the author's parents' memories of internment in several concentration and extermination camps during World War II. Handwritten Czech text, transcribed into English by the author, is printed over contemporary and historical photographic images from concentration camps. The original manuscript is reproduced on transparent interleaved pages. Family photographs provide a poignant contrast to these horrific accounts. Die cut pages fall around a flesh-colored, handmade paper cast of each parent's forearm, tattooed with its ineradicable number. Housed in a wooden box. Snake

The youthful adventures of two boys, Īme and Snake". In this long accordion book, text "snakes" around from front to back on paper that has a printed snake skin pattern. Short stories about snakes, both actual and symbolic, relate growing up experiences and lessons learned. A hand painted, textured snake wraps around the book and closes with a velcro clasp. 1992, edition 120, 3 1/2" x 7" (3 1/2" x 78" open). $30
